Origin: Western Australia, Australia
Characteristics: 3-8m evergreen tree
Aroma: Sweet, woody & exotic
Extraction Method: Steam-distilled
Made from the heartwood of the native Australian tree (Santalum spicatum), this species is not to be confused with East Indian Sandalwood (santalum album) although it has a very similar properties. Australian (santalum spicatum) is the rarest and most exotic of the Australian Sandalwoods due to the fact that trees must be 25 years or older to harvest. It represents over half of the Sandalwood traded around the world, annually.
In Essence Australian Sandalwood is wild harvested and not part of a plantation, but occurs naturally in the landscape. Each tree is harvested separately and no part is wasted, including the roots. Oil is extracted from chips of the heartwood using a gentle, steam distillation process to produce a light, golden-coloured oil.
The Australia Sandalwood industry provides a vital source of income to communities where it is harvested. Our producer is committed to community development and has financially supported local community projects over the years and adheres to strict harvesting regulations specified by the Australian Government to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Sandalwood Oil industry.
