Native to the Mediterranean, French Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is less hardy than its English counterpart and grows at a high altitude which typically produces the greatest amount of esters responsible for its calming and sedating properties. The flowering tops are then trimmed from the main plant and collected in a still, then steamed to extract an oil that is almost colourless.

Lavender has historically been a huge part of French life. In Medieval and Renaissance France, women who took in washing for hire were known as “lavenders” and Lavender has been traditionally used to scent drawers, perfume the air, ward off infection.

Traditionally used in aromatherapy to assist in the temporary relief of:

  • Tired muscles
  • Colds and coughs
  • Skin conditions such as eczema & mild acne
  • Minor burns
  • Stress
