With so many different essentials on the market and endless methods of use, starting your aromatherapy journey can be a little confusing. So, we have created a simple guide featuring our top 12 essential oils sourced from the finest crops and harvests around the globe to help you get started.  

 1. Frankincense: Boswellia carteri

Frankincense is an all-round healer and powerful restorative for general wellbeing.

Diffuse a few drops of the incense-like aroma to relieve nervous tension, to calm frayed nerves and to treat cold and flu symptoms. Apply to the body for a soothing effect on bronchitis, to prepare for meditation and to treat stress related insomnia.

Apply to the skin in jojoba base oil to rejuvenate the skin

2.     Geranium: Pelargonium graveolens

An aromatic rose-scented herb, Geranium is the classic relaxant and regulator of those dreaded mood swings.

Diffuse a few drops to relieve mood fluctuations that arise during premenstrual cycle and menopause. Added to base oil and dispersed into bath water, geranium eases hot flushes and aids detox of the body. Apply to the skin in jojoba for its rejuvenating properties and to treat dry eczema.

3.     Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus globulus

Eucalyptus is a powerful decongestant with antiseptic properties to treat all manner of cold and flu symptoms.

Diffuse a few drops to create a germ free environment, boost concentration and clear headaches associated with colds. Apply to the body in base oil to relieve mucous congestion and ease rheumatic pain and arthritis. Add a few drops to a foot bath to treat athlete’s foot.

Eucalyptus blends well with Lemon to treat bronchial infection.

*Avoid use on children under two years of age and keep well away from nose and face of children under 10 years.

4.     Bergamot, Citrus bergamia

Bergamot is o calming yet also uplifting to the central nervous system.

Diffuse a few drops of bergamot’s refreshing top note to relieve nervous tension before a presentation or zoom meeting. Apply in base oil to the skin to soothe itchiness or to the feet before bedtime to ensure a restful sleep.

Bergamot blends well with Peppermint to ease digestive upset.

*Avoid exposure to direct sunlight after application to the skin.

5.     Chamomile Roman 3% in jojoba oil, Chamaemelum nobile

In Essence Roman Chamomile is suspended in jojoba to preserve its natural goodness and make it accessible for everyday use.

The sweet apple-like aroma of this much loved ancient herb has been a favourite for treating insomnia and anxiety. 

Diffuse a few drops of chamomile’s delicate heart notes to calm and soothe the central nervous system, relieve irritability and help settle small children before bedtime. Apply in base oil to the abdomen in a clockwise direction to relieve period cramps, to the skin to relieve eczema and add a few drops to bath water to release daily stress.

Roman Chamomile blends well with lavender for general wellbeing for all the family.

6. Lavender: Lavandula angustifolia

Lavender is renowned for its calming and sedative properties. It has a sweet herbaceous aroma.

Diffuse a few drops into the environment to prepare for sleep and relax the mind and body at the end of a hectic day. Added to a warm bath it will reduce stress levels and alleviate muscular aches and pains. Simply inhaling a few drops from the bottle will promote relaxation and soothe a tension headache. Lavender applied as a compress to the skin helps clear blemishes, ease eczema and heal minor burns.

Lavender blends well with Geranium to balance mood swings.

7. Lemongrass: Cymbopogon flexuosus

Lemongrass is a powerful nerve tonic able to uplift moods and relieve stress. I

Diffuse the intense lemony aroma to refresh the environment, fortify nerves and help stimulate the metabolism. Add a few drops to carrier oil and apply to joints to reduce inflammation and relieve muscle strain after exercise. When feeling congested and bloated, massage a few drops mixed well in carrier oil to the abdomen for relief.

Lemongrass blends well with Grapefruit to help eliminate toxins from the body.

*Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use well diluted. May irritate sensitive skin.

8.  Peppermint Mentha piperita

The classic digestive and cleansing oil. A few drops in a diffuser of the cool menthol notes are instantly awakening and refreshing first thing in the morning.

Peppermint provides a boost when you feel run down and you are tired. Massage a few drops in carrier oil to back of the neck to relieve tension headaches and even relieve hay fever symptoms.

9.  Cedarwood, Juniperus virginiana

Cedarwood is hailed as one of the most grounding and calming of oils. it calms and overactive mind when you can’t switch off.

Diffuse a few drops of cedarwood’s nurturing base note to promote peace and tranquillity, combat nervous anxiety and help regulate hormonal imbalances. Apply in base oil to the skin to relieve arthritic pain and treat eczema. Add a few drops to steaming water and inhale to help ease mucous congestion.

10.   Lemon: Citrus limon

Lemon is both reviving and uplifting.

Diffuse a few drops to ease headaches and relieve mental exhaustion. A few drops added to jojoba and applied to the upper body will aid detox and even provide hangover relief. Perfect for use after a bout of illness to strengthen the immune response, simply add a few drops to jojoba oil for a brisk all-over body rub.

Add 1 drop to the end of cotton tip and apply directly to treat warts.
